(tylko po angielsku) In 2012, almost 900 million people (13% of world population) lived at or below the poverty of $1.90 per day. Almost one third of world population lived on less than $3.10 a day. There has been a substantial progress on reducing poverty in the past decades, however the work is far from being over and a lot of challenges remain. This course will focus on economic aspects of the development process in low-income countries. Rather than offering a comprehensive coverage of topics in development economics, which is impossible in 30h of lectures, this course will focus on few important topics. It will start with discussing the progress in terms of economic outcomes, poverty, health and education in the last 50 years. In particular, we will discuss success stories of so called Asian Tigers and the emergence of China, as well as not so rapid development in post-colonial sub-Saharan Africa. Through globalisation we will link this discussion with the next topic, which is poverty and inequalities. It will be put in the context of the recent debates about the top 1%. Africa is predicted to almost quadruple its population by the end of this century - in the next class, we will discuss the consequences for migration patterns, labour markets and the importance of youth bulge. Afterwards, we will focus on the importance of foreign aid in the development progress and intensive aid debates in academic and policy circles. |
