Abbreviated description: Discrete time simulation, simulation models of networks and protocols, performance measures, protocol correctness, simulation models of wireless channels Full description: In this course, we will see how communication networks and protocols, can be represented by discrete-time computer simulation models and studied experimentally for performance and correctness. We shall introduce SMURPH, a software package for specifying and modelling networks and protocols, and analyze a few case studies involving shared-media networks, like wired local area networks and wireless networks. We shall define the fundamental (low-level) performance measures of telecommunication systems (delays, throughput, packet delivery fraction, fairness) and see how they depend on network and protocol parameters. Our objective is to understand the principles and fundamental limitations of networks and protocols with respect to the interesting measures of performance and fairness and formulate design criteria leading to efficient and robust solutions. Our approach will be practical and experimental, i.e., no hard math will be required, although the students are expected to be familiar with the basics of probability and statistics.
