The course will be based on student presentations and practicing discussion skills. The presentations and discussions aim to bring students to consider how to have reasonable disagreements or develop a consensus within an academic environment with fundamental issues: a consideration of right and wrong. Topics include (depending also on students’ interests): Section I: Tools: Ethics and Logic 1. Introduction: course overview 2. Discussion and arguments: finding the truth through debate and discussion 3. Ethics: right and wrong 4. Are there such things as universal values? Section II: Application: Contemporary issues 5. Freedom to disagree? Academic freedom and the rise of cancel culture 6. The rise of Fake News: Intuitional news, individual reporters, and malicious actors 7. COVID-19: rights and solidarity 8. Nationality and Global citizenship: to whom do we owe allegiance? Section III: Application II: Thinking Towards the future 9. Global climate change: Rights and responsibilities 10. Work, Automation, and UBI 11. Kurzweil, AI, and the identity of the human person 12. Final exam |
