History of Urban Planning

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the history of the development of settlements and the construction of cities ranging from the Neolithic period to the 21st century. Students master the knowledge of this topic, as well as acquire skills determining the principles and characteristics of the formation of settlement and urban tissue in different scientific and cultural conditions. As a result, students gain theoretical basis for the practical skills in urban planning. Social competences: a sense of responsibility for design decisions and their impact on the conditions and life quality of residents of cities and settlements.

Lectures:

1. 1.From nomadic way of living to settlements. Processes that accompany the birth of permanent settlements. Proto-cities: Çatalhöyük and Aşicli Höyük in Anatolia and Jericho in Palestine.

2. The oldest cities on the regular plan (among others, Tell Buqras on the Euphrates c. 6500 BC), City States in Mesopotamia (Ur, Uruk and Habuba Kebira). Mohenjo Daro in the Indus Valley.

3. Cities of ancient Egypt.

4. Aegean civilization. Urban planning in ancient Greece. Development and planning of cities of the Roman Empire.

5. 5.The medieval city. Urban systems of medieval Europe. The city is.

6. The rise and spread of Islam; Form the first urban centers in the Islamic world; To transform cities in the territories conquered by the Arabs; The structure of a traditional Islamic City.

7. The concepts of and expansion of urban centers during the Renaissance. Ideal city – theoretical concepts of the city during the Renaissance. City fortress-the subordination of forms of defensive functions.

8. Urban Planning in the 17th and 18th centuries (Baroque and Classicist Era), Features of the baroque city plan in Italy, France-the beginning of the Baroque era in urban planning; French baroque and classicism; English urban planning in the 17th and 18th centuries; Baroque plans in Germany and Austria.

9. The traditions of city planning in China and Japan.

10. Transformation of cities as a result of the industrial revolution; Form of the concepts of social reforms of the first half of the 19th century; Remodeling projects and the expansion of European cities in the second half of the 19th century.

11. New concepts of cities in Europe and in the United States at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries; city patterns at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries; Development of urban planning at the beginning of the 20th century; Urban design concepts of the interwar period; Planning for cities after the second world war.

12. Planning for cities to processes of urbanization in the second half of the 20th century.
