Zakres tematów:

The course will focus on the reading and analysis of two novels, George Orwell’s 1984 and Angela Carter’s Nights at the Circus.

During the reading, students are expected to select and comment specific passages of the book as well as search for, select and summarize one academic source relative to the text and its analysis.

At mid-term, the students will be asked to apply the skills of close reading and interpretation thus exercised in the writing of a film or novel review.

At the end of the course, the students will take a test analyzing a passage from each novel with the use of an array of sources.

The course will be introduced with a discussion of George Orwell’s “Politics and the English Language” and with a wide exploration of the intertextual references in the first pages of Angela Carter’s The Magic Toyshop.

Four classes will be dedicated to each novel, of which three will focus on close reading and writing exercises of textual analysis and one will be dedicated to navigating critical and intertextual sources in view of academic writing.

The main topics proposed for detailed study will be – in the case of 1984: dystopia, the social function of language, individuality versus individualism, totalitarian power and democracy, the personal and the political in language and literature, fiction and culture as aspects of the text, surveillance and discipline, culture and the role of political discourse – in the case of Nights at the Circus: the relation between language and fantasy, metaphor and evocation in poetic prose, the function of ambiguity and ambivalence in the text, genre and gender, feminism in relation to the reader and to new theories of the subject, animality and humanity, the uncanny and the theory of performativity, the literary text as the plane of encounter of different worlds and world-views.
