Zakres tematów:

“Black Liberation”

The course will take the shape of a series of contextual analyses and intertextual connections on texts from or about Black Liberation and the problem of racism and discrimination in the USA, using the opening chapters of Chester Himes’ novel Run, Man, Run as a point of departure.

The course will be introduced by a brief discussion of George Orwell’s “Politics and the English Language,” a few selected anecdotes from Derek Jarman’s film Wittgenstein and the Austrian philosopher’s own Philosophical Investigations. The aim of the introduction is to establish the deep connection between language and culture which will be in various ways at the centre of the course.

The first class will be dedicated to a close reading of the text and a brief review of the biography of the author and critical bibliography on his work.

The three following classes will be dedicated to a study of historical and cultural context of the 60s in the US, especially in relation to the history of Black Liberation. The first class will focus on the history and two political speeches of Martin Luther King, the second will focus on a critical reading of Spike Lee’s biographical film about Malcolm X and the third will address the relation between language, culture and community in relation to the Black Power movement and the Black Panther Party.

The final class in the “contextual” section of the course will propose Spike Lee’s latest film BlackkKlansman as an example of a text that returns to the political tensions, the language and the historical events of the era by making them relevant to the present.

For the reminder of the course, the students will be asked to choose between three possible directions of research which examine in depth some of the themes and aspects of the starting text by Chester Himes. One, dealing with discrimination as systemic violence, will move from Jordan Peele’s Get Out, through Mary Harron’s American Psycho, back to Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man. A second itinerary will move from the film Death Wish 3, through Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq to the documentary The Interrupters and will thus address gun violence, its representation and a discussion of possible solutions. The final option, dealing with the loss of a sense of reality, will guide the students through the discourse on the individual in PK Dick’s fiction and Guy Debord’s critique of the spectacle starting from the popular film The Truman Show.

Metody dydaktyczne:

The students will be reading and watching selected texts each class and will prepare elements of analysis and reflection as groundwork for a collective discussion.

Metody i kryteria oceniania:

The students will be evaluated on the basis of their contributions to the discussion during class (20%), a mid-term written test (20%) and a final written test (60%).
